WELCOME TO EASINGTON - A UNIQUE COASTLINE Leader of District of Easington, Alan Napier, writes:- The District of Easington is a popular visitor destination offering a fascinating coast and countryside interwoven with a unique Christian and mining history. The district's churches and Seaton Holme at Easington Village - once the administrative centre of successive archdeacons, illustrate the strong Christian heritage. Today, there is a unique blend of rugged coastlines and sandy beaches, picturesque wooded denes and award winning public art with fascinating rural pathways weaving their way through the district. The Council is proud to be a leading partner of this £10 million TTT regeneration initiative, to develop the 12 mile stretch of coast for the enjoyment of visitors and locals alike. Other developments are also underway, designed to make the district a better place to stay, shop and live. One of the wildest and most compellingly attractive places in the region, the rugged terrain of the Easington coast is recognised nation-wide as a mecca for sea anglers. Now, restored pathways give everyone access to a multitude of fine bays and prominent headlands. Botanists, geologists and ornithologists cannot fail to appreciate the exceptional coastal seascape, as important a concern as any inland nature reserve. The National Trust is responsible for several miles of coastline, so the continued protection and preservation of rare plants, wildlife and magnesian limestone rock is assured. Magnificent views can be had from the district's highest point - Beacon Hill, part of the area which includes Foxholes Dene. From Beacon Hill, visitors can see the hills sweeping down towards the cliff tops, and reaching to the shorelines. To the south, they can see the breathtaking Blackhall Rocks, the golden sand at Crimdon Dene and beyond, an unrivalled view of the North Yorkshire moors. Residents and visitors alike are beginning to appreciate the restoration of our magnificent coastline to its former natural beauty. Which is why this Council has put together a District of Easington Visitor Guide for the new millennium. We are proud to
help turn the tide of the Easington coastline for future generations.
