What happned?
The Fireworks
There was 4 tons of fireworks at the "Sea of Lights," with a combined weight - pyrotechnics and launch equipment - of sixteen and a half tons. It took two pyrotechnicians working for three weeks to fuse them altogether for the "Sea of Lights". The synchronising of the display to Jez Lowe's specially commissioned music started on 14 August and continued almost up to the night itself. The offshore display from the ships at sea was complemented by land-based displays on the coast.

Jez Lowe - Music Man
International musician Jez Lowe, hails from Grantshouses, just outside Easington Colliery. A professional music man since 1979, his group, The Bad Pennies, perform acoustic and folk music to enthusiastic audiences of all age groups, as far away as America and Japan.

He draws inspiration for his music from his native North East, but admits to being influenced by his heroes Martin Carthy, Big Bill Broonzy, Bob Dylan and Woody Guthrie.

Jez was specially commissioned to write for the "Sea of Lights" by the District of Easington, having already written an anthem for the local children's Millennium event.

This work is entirely instrumental, choreographed as a "Son et Lumiére" exposition for the fireworks at the event, with crucial timings and synchronised visual/audio requirements.
Jez is now spending even more time abroad as he has now formed his own recording company in Los Angeles - Tantobie Records - in partnership with his manager.

He spends half the year touring with the band and the other half touring solo.
As the event unfolds along the Durham coast, Jez himself performed with The Bad Pennies in Hong Kong.
