The ancient parish of Seaham comprised a tiny village of less than 100 souls around the 11th Century St Mary's church. The exploitation of the coal reserves through the 19th Century brought Seaham Harbour and New Seaham into existence. The after effects of coal production ceasing in 1993 have been severe. Now the town is displaying its true character and preparing strongly for a bright future.
